Help, Thou, My Unbelief Return to sketches
This dramatic monologue retells the Gospel story of the healing of the demon-possessed boy from the perspective of the boy's father. The father tells of his emotional and physical journey to find the healer from Nazareth after all other attempts to heal his son had failed. His feelings range from disappointment (when Jesus' disciples cannot heal the boy) to anguish (when the crowd offers ignorant opinions of the cause of his son's ailment). Finally, Jesus arrives and asks if the man wants healing. When the man blurts out, "If you can help..." he instantly regrets it, afraid he has offended the teacher. Jesus' answer that anything is possible "for him who believes" triggers in the father an examination of the nature of belief. He stammers out, "help, thou, my unbelief," aware of his weakness and need. And at the Master's feet, he finds that it is enough.
