Body Language Return to sketches
BodyLanguage.jpg A reader begins to read a scripture about Christian unity only to find his or her own body not "on the same page." The reader's hand is shaking, his or her eyes are wandering, his or her feet want to run away, and the stomach keeps complaining. As the brain struggles to keep them all coordinated, the reader has to physically grab body parts and pull them back into line. With the reader alone on-stage and the voice actors voicing the body parts, this sketch illustrates the need for the Body of Christ to work as one.

We discussed various ways of doing the voices of the body parts. We thought about putting the voice actors off-stage with a microphone but were concerned that they wouldn't be able to coordinate with the on-stage actor. We talked about putting the voice actors in the sound booth with the sound engineer, but we thought microphone sharing would be an issue. Ultimately we pre-recorded the voices and put them on a CD, having the sound engineer follow along with the script with the play and pause buttons. This allowed us to select the best readings of each line and to edit the timings between lines. It also allowed the on-stage actor to rehearse on his own with the CD and to work out his blocking with the voices as they would actually sound.
